I must address an important issue about the revolution. This issue is extremely critical to the collapse of the Tatmadaw. Although I have already advised some within the National Unity Government (NUG) regarding this issue, I am going to say it again publicly so that the PDF can know about it too.
This issue is about the guarantee that the spouses of Tatmadaw soldiers, which the military council refers to as “ရဲမေ,” will not be considered as enemies.
When battles happen, these spouses of soldiers, inside the bases, will arm themselves to defend the bases. This is because the spouses of soldiers will be killed if they do not fight back.
The reason why they arm themselves is because they have been forcibly ordered to by the military council, and also because they are worried for their own safety.
If we think about it carefully, until now, no spouses of soldiers have ever killed a civilian.
The spouses of soldiers themselves are part of the people. Therefore, it is important for the People’s Defense Forces not to consider the spouses of the soldiers as enemies. Although there may be some that are hungry for war, 80% of the spouses are prisoners of the military council.
Although I know our side will not do anything beyond the law, a public announcement will ease the minds of many. I encourage the NUG to publicly announce that the spouses of soldiers are not enemies.
I have always believed the people’s aspirations ever since I started explaining the defection strategy. And it is because our aspirations are huge that we have come to accept the defection strategy.
And now, the people must show they understand the situation of the spouses inside military bases. The people must spread metta.
By estimates, if about 8,000 spouses do not arm themselves, it will save 400 billion kyats. Many lives will be saved.
The spouses of people’s soldiers are also the people. If we open the door for the spouses, the barrel of the gun that is put into their hands will be turned instead towards the military council.
